Thrissur to have city police commissionerate

Staff Reporter

P. Vijayan to become new Police Commissioner

Thrissur: Acknowledging the size and growing importance of Thrissur, the police will have a new organisational structure in the district. The Thrissur police district is being split into two: the city and the rural. The City Police Commissionerate will be headed by the City Commissioner and the rest of the district will come under Rural Police Superintendent.

Former Kozhikode City Commissioner P. Vijayan will be the new City Police Commissioner. M. Padmanabhan is the Rural Police Superintendent. Though the demand for creation of City Police Commissionerate was pending for long, the State Government had issued the order recently creating an urban police set up.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the city commissionerate at a function to be held at the Thrissur Town Hall on Thursday.

Addressing a media conference here on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police, Thrissur Range, B. Sandhya said that the Thrissur Subdivision (comprising Thrissur East, Thrissur West and Ollur circles) and Guruvayur Subdivision (comprising Peramangalam and Guruvayur circles) would come under the new City Police Commissionerate.

In all, the urban police set up would cover 12 police stations, including a woman police station and a traffic police station, she said.

The rural police district would have three subdivisions – Chalakudy (Puthukkad, Kodakara, Chalakudy, Mala circles); Irinjalakuda (Irinjalakuda, Kodungallur, Valappad and Cherpu circles) and Kunnamkulam (Kunnamkulam, Wadakkanchery, Chelakkara and Chavakkad circles).

“The district will get an additional police force including one Superintendent of Police, five Deputy Superintendents of Police, three Circle Inspectors, one woman Circle Inspector, five Sub Inspectors, six Assistant Sub Inspectors, 21 head constables and 49 police constables,” Ms. Sandhya said.

The additional strength would pave the way for upgrading the existing set up, she said.

The new administrative office for the urban police would presently be located at Ramavarmapuram until a new office complex came up at the proposed site in the city, Ms. Sandhya added.
