Councillors stage walkout alleging discrimination

MANAPPARAI: The opposition councillors belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) staged a walkout from the meeting of the Manapparai Municipal Council here on Monday.

The walkout was to protest against the discrimination in the implementation of development works.

Saroja Kandasamy, chairperson of the Manapparai Municipal Council, presided over the meeting.

As soon as the meeting commenced, P.Ramamoorthy (AIADMK) criticised the municipality on the poor roads and lighting facility in his ward.

The officials assured to redress his grievance. A wordy quarrel erupted between Mr. Ramamoorthy and E.Manohar (Congress) over this issue.

Soon a few AIADMK councillors moved towards the chairperson alleging discrimination in the implementation of development works. They urged the Council to allot the development works to all the wards. To press this demand, they staged a walk out from the meeting.

S. Pandimeena (MDMK) also joined the AIADMK members in the walkout.

A. Showkath Ali (CPI) staged a dharna by sitting on the floor of the council hall stating that road works were not implemented in his ward. He also condemned the non-provision of pattas to the poor for a long time. The officials convinced him, following which he withdrew the agitation.

Umamaheswari, Municipal Commissioner, and other officials participated in the meeting.
