‘Merit alone will decide police postings in Bangalore'

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Asserting that the Government will not allow Bangalore to turn into an operational ground for underworld elements, Home Minister R. Ashok on Tuesday declared that he will take steps to prevent political interference in the transfers and postings of police officers, especially in Bangalore city.

“Merit will be the sole criteria for deciding the postings of police officials in Bangalore. We will not compromise with merit in the postings and there will be no place for police officials in Bangalore if they lack merit,” Mr. Ashok said while replying to a discussion in the Legislative Council on the law and order situation in Bangalore.

Earlier, the Opposition members, including Janata Dal (Secular) floor leader M.C. Nanaiah alleged that the increasing political interference in the postings as well as administration of police department had affected the department's efficiency.

He also barred the using of police officers' pictures along with others in the hoardings and banners put up by various organisations in connection with any programme or event. He issued such instructions in the wake of concern expressed by the Council members that police officials' pictures were intentionally being used alongside persons with criminal antecedents in some of the banners and hoardings and that such a trend was sending a wrong message to people.

Mr. Ashok also issued a gag order against police officers by making it clear that none of the officials barring the DGPs, Commissioners and SPs, should go to the press on any information relating to the police department.
