Azad, Karunanidhi hold seat-sharing talks

Special Correspondent

Chennai: The Congress high command emissary and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad met Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday night to break the deadlock in seat-sharing talks between the two parties.

DMK sources said an announcement on the number of seats the Congress would get was expected late in the night.

Mr. Azad, who is in charge of Congress affairs in Tamil Nadu, arrived in Chennai after the Congress decided to adopt a practical approach as the talks between the five-member panel appointed by the high command and the DMK's election committee failed to make much progress on seat-sharing. Mr. Azad was received by Rajya Sabha MP M. Kanimozhi, TNCC president K.V. Thangkabalu, Congress whip in the Assembly Peter Alphonse and others.

Mr. Azad is flying back to New Delhi early on Thursday morning.

The high-level parleys come in the backdrop of a deadlock over the Congress demand for about 90 seats.
