Shyam and David pair claims title

CHENNAI: The pair of Shyam and S. David Anand (Gandhi Nagar) defeated the duo of Gowrishankar and Paramesh (Mylapore) 21-17, 20-22, 21-17 in the final of the inter-Club badminton tournament, conducted by The Mylapore Club-Indian Overseas Bank, here recently.

Other results: Finals: Women's doubles: Kaavya/ Ramya (Mylapore) bt Suzanne Venglet/ Kavitha (MRC) 21-14, 21-12. Mixed-doubles: Kavitha/ E. Raghavan (MRC) bt Kaavya/ Paramesh (Mylapore) 21-17, 18-21, 21-17.

Veterans' doubles: Ravi/ Raju (Corporation) bt Surendra Tatia/ Dr. Rajan (Kotturpuram) 21-19, 17-21, 21-14.

Nest Inn triumphs

Nest Inn, represented by R. Kannan, N. Niranjan, K.R. Venkataraman, S.K. Chari and R. Sree Krishnan, emerged the winner of the team-of-four duplicate event at the 34th Ramaratnam open bridge championship, conducted by The Mylapore Club, here recently.

Boaz Team, consisting of P.D. Boaz, Sridhar, Sundarajan, D. Vijay and R. Venkatesh, finished runner-up.

Title for Vivekananda

Vivekananda defeated Guru Nanak by four wickets to win the Viveka Trophy inter-collegiate cricket tournament, here on Tuesday.

Aided by R. Rohit's 46, the host reached the target of 147 with 13 balls to spare.

The scores: Guru Nanak 146 in 42 overs (A.C. Pratibhan 25, A.K. Balachander three for 20) lost to Vivekananda 147 for six in 47.5 overs (R. Rohit 46, N. Suraj 34) .

Mervin scores four

Mervin scored four goals to help Loyola Whites blank Bishop Heber (Trichy) 5-0 in a third round match of the Rev. Father Murphy Memorial inter-collegiate football tournament, here on Wednesday.

Rangan no more

D. Rangan, the former captain of Nungambakkam Sports Club ‘A', a first division cricket league team in the 1960s, passed away on February 21. He was 75. A wicketkeeper-batsman who graduated from Pachaiyappa's College, Rangan was an active promoter of cricket among youngsters and a familiar figure in the City's cricket circles.

Sports festival

The ninth Jeppiaar Educational Trust Sports (JETS), a State-level collegiate sports festival, will be held for women from March 5 to 7 and for men from March 12 to 14.

Competitions for women will be held in basketball, volleyball, chess, table tennis, tennis, ball-badminton, badminton and kabaddi, while the men's format will include football also.

Around 86 colleges from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to take part in the festival featuring over 2,500 competitors. Dr. Babu Manoharan, Director, St. Joseph's College of Engineering, said prize money will be awarded to the top four places in each event and the total expenditure for the event is around Rs.13.25 lakh.
