College students seek government intervention

Special Correspondent

They stage sit-in protest at Madurai Collectorate

MADURAI: A large number of students, including girls, from the American College staged a sit-in stir inside the Collectorate here on Thursday demanding the State government intervention to restore normality on their campus.

Students, who gathered under the banner “American College Students' Federation” (ACSF), wanted the government to appoint a special officer (officer on special duty) until the disposal of all cases pending in various courts.

The imbroglio between the supporters of the Bishop and a group of senior teachers on “takeover of power” had spoilt the environment on the campus.

The students, in a press release issued to mediapersons, urged the authorities concerned to vacate the anti-social elements in the hostels and ensure safety to the inmates. The hostellers should also be provided hygienic food, they demanded.

Expressing concern over the “stalemate” in the administration and the “war of words” between various groups, the students' federation hoped to resolve them at the earliest as examinations were fast approaching.

The government should take steps at the earliest and bring in peace on the campus, they demanded.
