dated March 4, 1961: Preservation of peace

Earl Attlee declared in Madras on March 3 that the absolute sovereignty of nations had become outmoded and they had to give up a little of it if world peace was to be established. The former British Prime Minister, who was inaugurating the Madras Branch of the World Association of World Federalists, said that distances had been narrowed down in the modern world and added that the closer the peoples lived together, the greater was the need for the States to give up something of their individual sovereignty. A packed audience at the Rajaji Hall heard Earl Attlee making a plea for the reform of the U.N. in order to make it an effective World Government.
