Munjawars have been opposing the participation of Kadapa peethadipathis in the religious ritual Police resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob NELLORE: Tension prevailed for a while at Kasumur Dargah (also known as Mastanvali Dargah) at Kasumur village in Venkatachalam mandal in the district on Thursday, when the local ‘mujawars' (priests) clashed with the Kadapa peethadipathis during the ‘Chinna Gandotsavam'. The priests perform ‘Ganda Mahotsavam' (applying sandal paste to the tombs) every year, and the festival was celebrated from February 28 to March 2 this year. The local ‘mujawars' were objecting the participation of Kadapa peethadipathis in the utsavam for some time and the latter appoached High Court over the issue. The court accorded permission for both the parties for performing the rituals and the police arranged bandobust for the Gandam festival. The priests performed ‘Chinna Gandam' in the Dargah on Thursday. Trouble broke out in the morning, when some ‘mujawars' of Kasumur village allegedly hurled coconuts and attacked the Kadapa peethadipathis. Nellore Circle Inspector Jayarama Subba Reddy, who was on bandobast duty, said two peethadipathis and a few others, suffered head injuries. Police resorted to a lathicharge and dispersed the mob. The injured were shifted to hospital. Following a complaint lodged by the Kadapa priests, the Venkatachalam police registered a case under Section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder) against five mujawars of the village and few others, said Nellore (Rural) Deputy Superintendent of Police P.V. Ravi Kumar. A police picket has been arranged in the village and the situation is under control. However, no arrests have been made so far, the Deputy Superintendent of Police added.
