Raise the bar, lawyers told

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: There has been a steady erosion of professional standards among lawyers and this will have its bearing on the dispensation of justice, P.N. Ravindran, judge, Kerala High Court, has said.

Inaugurating a national seminar on maintenance of professional standards and legal control in India, here on Thursday, Mr. Ravindran said the erosion would ultimately reflect on the dispensation of justice as the Bar was the source from where judges were recruited.

The seminar was organised by the Maharaja's Government Law College, Ernakulam.

Many young lawyers see the profession merely as a source of income. This is a profession where the lawyer has a duty to be fair to his counterpart, the judge, and his client.

The lawyer should be able to ventilate the grievances of his client. But in some cases, it is found that the lawyer is not familiar with the facts of the cases, he said.

N.K. Jayakumar, Vice Chancellor, National University of Advanced Legal Studies; P. Leelakrishnan, former Professor, Cochin University of Science and Technology; A.S. Saroja, Principal, Law College, Thrissur; S.S. Girisankar, Assistant Professor, Government Law College, Ernakulam; and Janardana Shenoy, general secretary of the Law College Union; spoke.

G. Rajasekharan Nair, Principal of the law college, presided.
