Students outfit seeks change in examination system

Special Correspondent

DEMANDING ACTION:Members of NSUI staging a protest in Gulbarga

GULBARGA: The National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Thursday demanded a change in the examination system of Gulbarga University for degree courses by allowing students failing in a few subjects in one semester to clear them in the subsequent exam.

Students of various colleges staged a demonstration here and submitted a memorandum, addressed to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj, to the district authorities.

In the memorandum, they said that the present examination system did not allow students to clear subjects in which they had failed in one semester in the next examination.

Shivakumar Ashtagi, secretary of the University Committee of the NSUI, said that if a student failed in a few subjects in the first semester, he was allowed to clear those subjects only in the third semester and not in the second one. “This system is a deterrent on students because if anyone fails in a few subjects in the fifth semester, he has to wait for a full year to clear those subjects.”

Mr. Ashtagi warned the authorities that if the university did not change the examination system immediately, the students would intensify their agitation.
