374 polling booths ‘sensitive'

R. Vimal Kumar

Tirupur: Election officials have identified 374 of the 1,885 polling booths in the district for the forthcoming Assembly polls as ‘sensitive booths.'

Superintendent of Police A. Arun told The Hindu that the Tirupur North constituency had the maximum of 76 sensitive booths among the eight constituencies in the district and Dharapuram constituency had the least of 10 such booths. Of the remaining sensitive booths, 28 were located in Kangeyam constituency, 70 in Avinashi constituency, 53 in Tirupur South constituency, 64 in Palladam constituency, 35 in Udumalpet constituency and 38 in Madathukulam constituency.

The sensitive booths, according to election officials, have been identified according to the guidelines stipulated by the Election Commission of India. Mr. Arun said that Central Reserve Police Force and Central Industrial Security Force would be deployed near the sensitive booths in addition to the armed local police strength. In the polling stations where the services of the CRPF/CISF men were used, at least one of them would be stationed at the entrance of the booth in a manner that he could get an unrestricted view of the entire polling procedures inside. Mr. Arun said that the police had started keeping a tab on anti-social elements near the sensitive booths and were speeding up the execution of pending arrest warrants.

Micro observers would be appointed near sensitive stations. They would report the day-to-day proceedings to the Election Observers of the respective constituencies directly, official sources said.
