Increase in number of polling booths

Tirupur: A total of 9,136 persons will be assigned poll duties in the district, according to District Collector C. Samayamoorthy.

At a Meet-the-Press programme at Collectorate on Thursday, he said that the number of polling booths had gone up by 102 compared to the Lok Sabha elections in 2009. It now stood at 1,885, he said.

“These booths will be located in 910 schools and in a building owned by Forest Department near the Chinnar check post,” he added.

The Collector said that 3,360 ballot units and 2,439 control units of EVMs had been stocked in the district.

For ensuring free and fair elections, a flying squad would be deployed this time for each of the eight Assembly constituencies in the district.

“The squad comprising a deputy tahsildar, a Sub-Inspector of police and a videographer will travel around to find any malpractices such as exchange of cash for votes, among other irregularities,” Mr. Samayamoorthy said.

Likewise, video surveillance teams would be introduced to monitor and take footage of the paraphernalia displayed by political parties at their campaigns to assess the poll expenditure.

Mr. Samayamoorthy said that a media certification and monitoring committee, headed by District Revenue Officer, would be evaluating the spending of each candidate on print and visual media advertisements.
