Call to protect interests of workers

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Delhi Labour and Industries Minister Ramakant Goswami had called on Union Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge to seek his Ministry's cooperation in ensuring that the labour laws in Delhi protected the interests of workers most effectively.

Mr. Goswami said the Building and Other Construction Welfare Fund had been set up by Delhi Government under the Building and Other Construction Workers and Welfare Cess Act-1996. “It has been observed that the fund is not being fully used due to lack of a provision to make membership of workers mandatory,” he said.

In view of this anomaly, he demanded that the registration of workers be made mandatory as it was under other similar legislations like ESI Act and EPF Act.

Mr. Goswami also apprised the Union Minister that the Delhi Government has extended the enrolment period under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna Scheme by two months up to March 31 and around one lakh workers have been enrolled under it thus far.
