Exploring the State's culture and heritage
N. Anand
CHENNAI: “I have touched gun powder, but this (chilli powder) is a different one.” This remark by a visiting jawan took the waiter in the vicinity of Thanjavur temple by surprise. Even before he could open his mouth, an ex-serviceman ordered: ‘Kapi podu, idli kodu'. Apart from the duo, the other family members of the jawans and ex-servicemen belonging to 5 {+t} {+h} Battalion JAK Rifles, did their bit to confuse the waiter.
Seven guides and three serving officers are engaged in teaching small words in Tamil to about 250 people for the last few days, who are in the State as part of the golden jubilee function of 5 {+t} {+h} Battalion JAK Rifles.
The main agenda of the team members hailing mostly from Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh was to see, learn and experience the rich culture of Tamil Nadu.
One of the team members told The Hindu: “We have divided the programme into two parts – fun, leisure and pilgrimage – as the team had people right from the age of 15 to 78.
