Troicki gives Serbia the lead
NOVI SAD (SERBIA): Viktor Troicki beat back Rohan Bopanna's challenge to win 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3 and give host Serbia a 1-0 lead in their Davis Cup World Group match here on Friday.
In Zagreb, Croatian Marin Cilic, ranked 20th in the world, clawed back for a 4-6, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over the 36th ranked Florian Mayer to give the host a 1-0 lead over visiting Germany.
At Charleroi (Belgium), ninth-ranked Fernando Verdasco pulled of a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 win over Xavier Malisse to give Spain a 1-0 lead over the host.
Verdasco had stepped in to play the opening match after the sixth-ranked David Ferrer pulled out with an inflamed nerve in his shoulder.
At Vienna (Austria), visiting France took the opening singles. Jeremy Chardy , ranked 55th in the world, pulled off an upset 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 win over the 10th-ranked Jurgen Melzer.
