200 companies of Central forces sanctioned

Drop in political clashes after Netai: West Bengal Chief Secretary

Assembly polls begin from April 18, will be held in six phases till May 10

Kolkata: Of late, there has been a decline in incidents of political clashes in West Bengal, Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh has said.

He said this in response to reporters' query over abatement in political clashes in the State after the incident in Lalgarh's Netai village on January 7, which left nine dead.

Steps taken to

maintain peace

“Yes there has been a drop in cases of political clashes”, he said, adding that he did not know the reason behind this. He said that illegal arms were being recovered from various parts of the State and non-bailable arrest warrants were being issued as part of the preventive measures being taken across the State to help maintain peace.

Politically-sensitive areas like the hills and the Jangalmahal were also calm now, Mr. Ghosh said.

Discussions going on

Meanwhile, Governor M. K. Narayanan on Friday summoned Mr. Ghosh, West Bengal Home Secretary G. D. Gautama and Director General of Police Naparajit Mukherjee. “The discussions were related to the law and order situation in West Bengal,” Mr. Ghosh said, while adding that Mr. Narayanan also made queries about the advance team of Central forces.

West Bengal has so far been sanctioned 200 companies of Central forces to carry out confidence-building exercises ahead of the polls which are scheduled to commence from April 18. Some of them have already taken up their postings.

800 companies to help

The State Government has asked for 800 companies of Central forces for helping the West Bengal Police in conducting the polls. Polling would be held in six phases ending on May 10 this year .
