Searching police raid Maoist hideouts, in vain

Kolkata: Suspected Maoists and supporters of the Maoist-backed Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadharaner Committee have abducted a police constable, within days of his marriage, from West Bengal's Jhargram region.

“Sarkar Hembram was on a month-long leave for his marriage and was abducted by a group of armed assailants from his in-laws' house at Mahali village in the Beliabera area of Paschim Medinipur district on Thursday evening,” Mukesh Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police of Jhargram police district, told The Hindu on Friday.

Mr. Hembram was attached to one of the three commando units of the State Armed Police stationed in the three Maoist-affected districts. He was posted in Purulia district.

Mr. Hembram's father-in-law, Khelaram Tudu, also a constable posted in Midnapore town, lodged a first information report on Friday morning.

“We have been conducting raids on the houses and hideouts of all known Maoist squad members and PSBJC supporters in the region since morning but without success. We have not received any ransom demand,” Mr. Kumar said. Mr. Hembram hails from Poradia village in the Beliabera area.

Untraced

Meanwhile, three policemen and an NGO activist, who were suspected to have been abducted by Maoists in two separate incidents, remain untraced. Constables Shabbir Mollah and Kanchan Garai went missing from the Dharampur area near Lalgarh in Paschim Medinipur in 2009. Intelligence Branch officer Partha Biswas and NGO activist Soumyajit Basu could not be traced since October last after they disappeared from Purulia's Balarampur area.
