Bridge develops cracks

TAMBARAM: A rift between two slab decks on the newly opened road overbridge in Tambaram is giving anxious moments to the motorists.
Since Thursday evening, motorists, including two-wheeler riders, have been complaining of a structural defect in the facility's ramp leading to Mudichur Road from GST Road. The road overbridge, built at a cost of Rs.78 crore, was inaugurated only on Monday. Officials and workers at the site on Friday morning got to know about the gap formed between the two slab decks. Following this, a patch of tar mixed with gravel was brought to the site. Meanwhile, the portion of the side wall of the first slab deck inclined away by about six inches from the second deck.
Staff engaged by the bridge contractor and officials initiated remedial measures. They said there was no need for alarm as they had already started “vertical re-inforcements.” Clamps joining the two slab decks were put in place and the works would be completed in two days, officials added.
