Global targets 250-300 liver transplants each year

HYDERABAD: “ I got a new lease of life three years ago and I am now continuing with my acting, directing, writing columns and blogs”, said well-known Telugu film personality AVS, who was among those who narrated their experiences on undergoing liver transplantation at the Global Hospitals here on Friday.

The occasion was to mark the completion of 100 liver transplants by the Global Hospitals Group in the last one year. Addressing a press conference, chairman and managing director, Global Hospitals Group, K. Ravindranath, said the hospital had started liver transplants eight years ago. Today it became one of the foremost institutions in carrying out a wide variety-- split liver, auxiliary liver, living donor and cadaver liver transplantations at Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. Patients from the Middle East, Africa and Europe were also coming here to seek treatment for liver ailments.

Plans

He said it was planned to make the Group truly global in the next three to four years and perform the largest number of liver transplantations.

About 250- 300 such transplants would be conducted each year. Renowned liver transplant surgeon Mohammed Rela pointed out although liver transplantation was being done in a big way in the country, the demand was increasing.

Success rate

Dr. Ramesh, paediatric hepatologist, said the success rate of liver transplants carried out among children at the hospital was 90 per cent and on par with the best centres in the world.

Awareness

Dr.Dharmesh Kapoor, senior hepatologist stressed the importance of creating greater awareness on organ donation among people.

Mr. AVS too echoed same views.
