HYDERABAD: The government has proposed to take several stringent steps within the existing Act to check video piracy as it is causing immense damage to the film industry.

The Group of Ministers, comprising Home Minster P. Sabitha Indra Reddy, I&PR and Cinematography Minister D. K. Aruna and Law Minister E. Pratap Reddy, constituted to study the proposal of bringing video piracy under the ambit of AP Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Dacoits, Goondas, Act 1986 held a meeting with representatives of AP Film Chambers of Commerce and other organisations here on Friday.

It was suggested that, to begin with, measures such as heavy penalty, longer period of punishment, issuing non-bailable warrant against offenders under the existing Act itself should be considered to check the menace.

The meeting decided that a list of video libraries operating in the State must be prepared and licences granted to them.

In the first phase licences must be issued to video libraries in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Ranga Reddy by April 30 and the remaining districts by May 31. The film industry would have coordination meetings with the Police Department every month about action taken against offenders.

The government agreed to examine the request for setting up special courts in all districts for quick disposal of video piracy cases.

Mr. P. Shyam Prasad Reddy, President, Telugu Film Producers Council suggested that the video libraries and parlours be checked regularly for pirated DVDs and CDs.
