Mamata sure of winning polls, says Trinamool

Staff Reporter

Kolkata: “Contrary to claims of Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders that our party chief Mamata Banerjee is not contesting in the State Assembly elections as she is afraid of losing, it is Ms. Banerjee's confidence that the party would storm to power that she wants to concentrate on campaigning,” senior Trinamool Congress leader Subrata Mukherjee said here on Saturday.

Ms. Banerjee announced on Thursday that she would not contest but spearhead the campaign and provide leadership if the Trinamool came to power.

She had also said that she could take recourse to the constitutional provision that allowed one to get elected within six months of the government being formed.

Criticising CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury's statement that the fear of losing was holding her back, Mr. Mukherjee told journalists: “It is a rather amusing comment as Ms. Banerjee is assured of her party's victory. Someone who has never contested a single election in his life should desist from making such statements. It reflects the person's growing insecurity about others' success.”

Mr. Mukherjee asserted that Ms. Banerjee would not do anything “unconstitutional.” He demanded that all illegal arms ‘stockpiled' by several CPI(M) Ministers and leaders in several parts of the State should be immediately seized.
