Tamil Nadu
Ryots' outfit to back AIADMK
Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE: The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam at its State-level general body meeting held here recently voiced concern over the continuing plight of farmers and farm labourers in Tamil Nadu.
In a resolution adopted, the Sangam appealed to farmers to support the AIADMK-Left parties combine in the Assembly elections to safeguard their interests.
The Sangam said that with government help, cultivable lands were being converted into special economic zones and for other commercial purposes. This had resulted in a marked decline in foodgrains production.
Above all, small land holdings of farmers were being forcibly taken away by those with political clout and with the connivance of the officialdom. Instead of giving away two acres of land to the landless labourers, the government was striving for creating land banks for the sake of the corporates.
The Sangam said that several cooperative banks had been closed down, thus making it impossible for farmers to access loans. This had pushed the farmers to the money lenders, who were charging hefty interest.
