‘Karnataka has untapped wind energy potential'

Special Correspondent

Convention on wind power to begin on April 7

There are plans to generate an additional 2,660 MW of wind energy in Karnataka by 2014.

Bangalore: Karnataka has a huge untapped wind energy potential, and the recently formulated Renewable Energy Policy has targeted a wind capacity addition of 2,660 MW by 2014, said Rajendra Kharul, head of the Centre for Wind Power at the World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WISE).

On the national scene, the National Action Plan on Climate Change proposes to increase the share of renewable energy (RE) in the total energy mix in the country to 15 per cent by 2020, Mr. Kharul said.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Kharul said WISE, in association with Global Wind Energy Council, is organising an international convention on wind power – Wind Power India 2011 – at Chennai from April 7 to 9 to focus on challenges related to wind power generation in India.

It will be attended by over 100 experts. The event in Chennai will also present awards in many categories related to wind energy generation. G.M. Pillai, founder director of WISE, said a total of 50,000 MW of wind power will have to be added in India over the next 10 years, adding to the existing 13,000 MW to achieve the target by 2020. The minimum share of RE in the national grid will have to be 5 per cent, starting 2009-10, to reach the target by 2020, he said.
