Kolkata festival for student film-makers

Ananya Dutta

The second edition of ‘Cinematheque' has attracted over 57 entries

KOLKATA: An opportunity to gaze through the crystal ball into the future of film-making in the country presented itself here on Tuesday with the inauguration of a film festival open only to student films.

Experiments with form and narration vied with films exploring unconventional themes such as male virginity and the conflict between Medicine and Religion over organ donation at the second edition of ‘Cinematheque', a two-day festival organised by the Xaverian Film Academy.

Limited to documentaries and short fiction films with a run time of 45 minutes, the films on offer include a documentary on a man who has traversed more that 156 countries on his bicycle; a film on the workers who have served the Mayo College in Ajmer over four generations; explorations into the city and intense human experiences.

“We received 57 entries including the graduation films from various film schools as well as some independent applicants. Of those, 15 were shortlisted to be included in the festival,” said Xaverian Film Academy deputy secretary Sanjog Dutta.

FTII films

Apart from the students of the Academy itself, films have been received from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Whistling Woods International, the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, he added.

To mark International Women's Day that coincided with the inauguration of the festival, A Journey directed by award-winning documentary film-maker Ananya Chatterjee was selected to be the opening film of the festival.

The film is a prologue to her film Understanding Trafficking and is about the journey of rescued women, who were being trafficked, to normal life.

Film-makers Supriyo Sen, Suman Mukhopadhyay and Ranu Ghosh were present at the occasion.
