KOLKATA: There was tension on the campus of Presidency University here on Tuesday as supporters of rival student unions – Students' Federation of India (SFI) and Independents' Consolidation (IC) -- clashed with each other and the police had to be deployed to bring the situation under control. Trouble began on the campus on Monday when some students of the two unions were involved in a scuffle. Alleging that the incident had been instigated by members of IC, SFI organised protests at the gates of the campus and classes were suspended during the day. “We were protesting against Monday's incident when some members of IC attacked us resulting in a clash,” said Rik Chatterjee, secretary of Kolkata district committee of SFI. When Vice-Chancellor Amita Chatterjee assured the students that an inquiry into the incident would be conducted, the protest was called off, he added. Independents' Consolidation, however, claimed that the clash occurred when students were not allowed to enter the campus. “We were trying to enter the campus, but SFI activists attacked us and our students retaliated,” said Chhandak Chatterjee, a spokesperson for IC.
