Dhumal snubs Opposition for walk-outs

Staff Correspondent

SHIMLA: Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on Tuesday blamed the Congress-led Opposition for being careless about the public money being spent on them. Commenting on their walk-outs, he said the Congress had failed to appreciate the work done by the government which has been applauded by various appraisal agencies and media groups.

The Chief Minister said it was the Central Government that had denied visas to Chinese construction engineers because of which renovation work on national highways, especially in apple producing areas, was delayed.

The Chinese had bagged the contracts in open global tenders during the last Congress regime in the State, he informed.

The State Government, he claimed, was leaving no stone unturned to set up its own fruit wholesale market at Parala in Shimla district to prevent exploitation of hill farmers.

Brushing aside Opposition leader Vidya Stoke's allegations on appalling roads, he said the previous Congress government renovated just about 900 km of road in five years whereas his government has renewed about 4,687 km of road in just three years.

Mr. Dhumal also blamed the Congress for piling up losses in the public sector Gumma apple carton factory. He said Ms. Stokes had recommended its closure and change of land use when in government but she now wants revival of the move.
