Delectable fare: A variety of apples and other fruits being sold on streets of Hanamkonda.

WARANGAL: Fruits which were hitherto not seen and available are now within the reach of common people, thanks to the corporate supermarkets.

The fruits which are grown in different continents are now available everywhere in the town. The kiwi fruit, which is grown in New Zealand is now available in super markets in the town. Apples of different varieties grown in different countries are now obtainable in Hanamkonda town.

The expensive kiwi is priced at Rs. 299 per kg. Pears, which are imported and hitherto not available in the market are now sold at Rs. 70 per kg. A wide range of apples have flooded the market here such as Granny Smith (Rs 166 per kg, Royal Gala (Rs 150 per kg), Red Delicious (Rs. 110 kg), Kinnaur (Rs 110 kg) and Fuji (Rs. 135 per kg). Crimson and green in hue, and glazed these fruits sure seem inviting.

Speaking to The Hindu, associate professor of English, K Damodar Rao said fruits in his childhood days only meant orange and banana. “Strawberries were seen only in television advertisements. But, now they are available with street vendors priced at Rs. 40 a box containing about a dozen. They are all imported from other countries,” he said.

Fifty five-year-old Banda Ravi of Warangal pointed out that some time ago even dates were rarely seen which are now available in abundance – in different qualities and at different prices.

With the mercury levels slowly picking up, watermelons and muskmelons too flooded the markets. Imported oranges and also Banana Robusta too are being sold extensively in the town.

All kinds of fruits are now available on carts in the streets of Hanamkonda, Warangal and Kazipet besides the supermarkets Reliance Fresh, More and Spencers.
