Students, teachers to help in poll process

VILLUPURAM: Unlike previous elections to the Assembly, students and the academia will be involved in the the coming polls. The step has been initiated by the Election Commission, according to R.Palanisamy, Collector and District Election Officer.

He has directed college principals to prepare separate lists of students and faculty well versed in the operation of laptops and who are willing to serve in the polling stations on polling day.

They would operate web-camera fitted laptops, booted with software provided by the Election Commission. The laptop would capture the voters entering polling stations and other happenings and transmit the data to the Election Commission.

Addressing a meeting of college principals here, the Collector said that students who had completed 18 years of age could participate in this exercise with the consent of their parents.

Faculty members or experts, who were desirous of serving in the polling stations, could be given an honorarium for the day's service. Both the lists should be submitted to the Collector by March 11.

Handing over Form-16 to the principals, Mr. Palanisamy told them that they could also inform the students to enroll themselves in the electoral rolls and if they had already done so, they could motivate their family members, who were yet to register in the voters' lists.

The filled in Form-16 could be handed over to the Collector by March 16.
