Man robbed of Rs. 5 lakh

Tirupur: A 45-year-old grocery shop owner was robbed of Rs 5 lakh at Udumalpet on Wednesday evening.

Police said the incident occurred when Devaraj was heading on a two-wheeler to open an account in a bank with his friend, J. Prabhakaran (41), who works as a manager in a textile mill.

The robbery took place when they stopped to let Devaraj take a photograph. A bike rider then came near them and, deviating their attention, snatched away the money kept on the petrol tank of the vehicle. The Udumalpet police have registered a case and are investigating.

53 gamblers arrested

The police arrested 53 people on charges of gambling during raids in the district on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

During the raids, they recovered Rs 1.27 lakh and 14 two wheelers from the accused. Police said G. Rajendiran and 22 others were taken into the custody from Teachers' Colony under Perumanallur police station limits. The others were picked up from Dharapuram.
