MUMBAI: Sanjay Dutt has, along expected lines, been granted permission by the Congress High Command on Thursday to resign from his seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, to pave the way for Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to be elected to the Upper House.
Mr. Sanjay Dutt — not the Bollywood actor — is expected to tender in his resignation on Friday.
Mr. Chavan and Mr. Dutt met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and Mr. Dutt sought her permission to submit his resignation as a member of the Upper House. Mr. Chavan, who had taken over as Chief Minister after the resignation of Ashok Chavan, has to be elected to the State Legislature by May 11.
The budget session of the Legislature begins on March 14.
Mr. Dutt said he would continue to work as a soldier of the party.
