GUNTUR: The two-day National Conference on `Bioremediation and Sustainable Environmental Technologies' sponsored by Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) Guntur Regional Centre concluded at Bapatla Engineering College (BEC) on Friday. The program was organised by the BEC's Biotechnology Department. V.T.P. Vinod, Senior Scientist of BARC and CCMB, and G Gowri Shankar, Manager (Quality Control), KCP Sugars Pvt. Ltd. gave expert lectures on Friday. Mr. Vinod dwelt at length on `Bioremediation: Techniques, perspectives and green chemistry applications'. He said Bioremediation was a natural process perceived by the public as an acceptable waste treatment process for contaminated material such as soil. Many compounds that were legally considered to be hazardous could be transformed into harmless products through that process. Bioremediation could often be carried out on site without causing a major disruption of normal activities. Besides, it was less expensive than other technologies used for clean-up of hazardous waste. Mr. Gowri Shankar explained about the treatment of wastes in sugar industry and distilleries. The event was inaugurated by A.P Environmental Appraisal Committee Chairman Bayyapu Reddy.
