Fisheries harbour to go green

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Cochin Port Trust plans to turn the Cochin Fisheries Harbour at Thoppumpady into an eco-friendly facility with fisheries-related industrial activities on the harbour premises. Optimal land usage after demolition of some of the existing buildings is at the core of the plans drawn up by the port trust, which has invited bids from consultants to prepare a master plan for the project.

The port trust plans to put to best use both the buildings on lease now and land that lies vacant to provide long-term economic benefits to the stakeholders. The revamped fisheries harbour will have proper infrastructure to facilitate a host of fisheries-related activities.

Consultants for the project, to be picked later this month through a tendering process, will prepare the master plan and provide an action plan for making the harbour eco-friendly. The consultants will also provide a financial model for the operation of the fisheries harbour.

Improvements are already being carried out at the Fisheries Harbour, including building a new vehicle bay and a road within the harbour area with assistance from the Union Ministry of Agriculture.

The Cochin Fisheries Harbour, maintained by the Cochin Port Trust, has facilities for nearly 1,000 fishing vessels to berth. It is one of the key fish landing centres in Ernakulam district.
