Visakhapatnam
Medical tests being conducted at a special camp organised by Alluri Walkers Association at Alluri Seetha Rama Raju junction at Seethammadhara in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. VISAKHAPATNAM: One can lead a healthy life through regular walking, exercise and yoga, said noted physician Kootikuppala Surya Rao here on Saturday. Participating as a chief guest at the general body meeting of Alluri Walkers Association, he said it was estimated that the number of patients suffering from heart diseases, cancer, diabetes and respiratory problems would grow rapidly by 2020. Describing these disorders as ‘costly diseases', Dr. Surya Rao underlined the need to educate the public on the causes of these diseases. Giving up smoking, abstaining from drugs, consuming nutritious food and exercising regularly would help in keeping these diseases at bay. Diabetologist M. Ramesh Kumar said globalisation has led to unnecessary tension among all sections of the people. He said exercise was the only way to counter these lifestyle disorders. Those, who were not walking at all were found to be falling an easy prey to various diseases. Parents should also abstain from putting extreme pressure on their children to score more marks in examinations. This would lead to health problems among them at a tender age. Regular exercise, clean drinking water and a lifestyle where pressure could be avoided would increase the lifespan. Women's specialist Sunanda Rani said breast cancer and delivery-related problems were on the rise among women. She said illiteracy was the main cause of women falling prey to various diseases. She underlined the importance of hospital deliveries and utilising modern medical treatment. Dr. Ramesh Naidu and association chief adviser Ch. Narasinga Rao also spoke. A free medical camp was organised under the aegis of Nikhita Hospital. BP and blood glucose tests were conducted. Association president K. Venkatapathi Raju, general secretary Ommi Appa Rao and treasurer M. Venkateswara Rao were among those who participated.
