More than 800 units in the 18 circles are working during the day or early morning hours Absenteeism brought down with usage of mobile phones for attendance monitoring HYDERABAD: After expanding the mobile phone surveillance for the entire city to ensure effective lifting of garbage bins and attendance, GHMC is preparing a “micro-plan” at the sweeping units' level. “We have realised that close monitoring is required at the micro level for making the sanitation work more efficient. We are going to start a pilot project in areas like Begum Bazar and S.R.Nagar,” said Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) S. Aleem Basha. There are more than 800 units working in the 18 circles with most of them working during the day or early morning hours. Each unit consists of 18 workers, again predominantly women. The Municipal Corporation claims that the earlier complaints of absenteeism have been considerably brought down with the usage of mobile phones for attendance monitoring. “We have procured 300 cell phones and all sanitary supervisors have been trained to use them. They are taking photos of the units working at a particular slot and time. The same are sent to the central server to be observed real time. It has also halted impersonation,” explains Mr. Basha. Efficient method The same method was also being used to check for lifting of garbage bins and it has led to more efficient functioning, he says. Bins location The bins location is being identified with the help of Google maps. Using the mobile phones for monitoring of sanitary works started on an experimental basis last year at Abids and Khairatabad. Over the last few months, the monitoring system was spread across to other circles in phases with good results, according to Mr. Basha. He feels that the sanitation and cleanliness in the capital is only going to be improved further with the concentration on micro-level planning at the units' level.
