Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), in association with HelpAge India, has set up ‘Aasara Senior Citizen Helpline–1253' at CVR Municipal High School. The helpline would be formally inaugurated by Secondary Education Minister K. Parthasarathi and others on Sunday. The volunteers of HelpAge India would be available at the helpline centre to assist the aged. Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu said on Saturday that the helpline would provide services to all the elders who crossed 60 years of age. The main objective was to protect such people from abuse and seek police intervention, if necessary. Information and referral services to the senior citizens, supporting the senor citizens by voluntary network, counselling for depressed elders and so on were some of the other objectives. Rescuing roadside old people and admitting them into old-age homes would also be taken up. The corporation would provide a computer, two tables with chairs and a television set. A library would be set up at the centre for recreation of senior citizens. Theological books, newspapers, indoor games like chess, caroms etc would be provided. The VMC and HelpAge India had some time ago entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for the purpose.
