HYDERABAD: The Government of India is pulling out all the stops to double the country's exports to US $ 450 billion over a period of three years from now to bring down the trade deficit, Director-General of Foreign Trade Anup K. Pujari said here on Saturday.

He was talking to presspersons on the sidelines of an Open House conducted by the Federation of Indian Exports Organisations (FIEO) on Foreign Trade Policy.

Mr. Pujari said that the utilisation by Andhra Pradesh of the Central funds sanctioned under the Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports Scheme was the best in the country. “We had given Rs. 152 crore under the scheme and Andhra Pradesh has made an outstanding achievement by completing 81 of the 85 export infrastructure projects,” he said. Lok Satta Party President Jayaprakash Narayan urged the officials to come up with concrete proposals aimed at value addition in the food processing sector to help the farming community that was in distress year after year.

Principal Secretary-Industries Busi Sam Bob said most promoters who had taken space in Special Economic Zones in the State were harbouring apprehensions about how long the incentives would be continued.

He said they were of the opinion that incentives were needed over an extended period of at least six years for the sector to achieve the projected growth.

In his welcome address, Walter D'Souza, Regional Chairman, FIEO said the New Year had started on a positive note for the exporting community with exports reaching the set targets with a 32.5 per cent growth in January, 2011 alone.
