This Day That Age
The crucial South Africa session of the Commonwealth Conference was resumed in London on March 14 in an unprecedentedly tense atmosphere, with all the Prime Ministers anxious about the future of their association not as a matter of long term speculation but as something that would be affected by their decision within the next few days. The debate achieved at least one result – it exploded the doctrine that South Africa's application for re-admission on becoming a Republic is a mere formality, unrelated to her racial policies. The argument that it is an “internal affair” was challenged by both Mr. Nkrumah and Tunku Abdul Rahman who pointed out that it could not be so regarded since apartheid operated not only against Africans but against other Commonwealth non-white visitors to S. Africa.
