KASARAGOD: The State Excise Department has set up special squads at various centres in the district to control illegal trade and consumption of spurious liquor, spirit and drugs ahead of next month's Assembly elections. Vigil will be stepped up in select localities, forest areas and tribal colonies. In the wake of reports of large-scale manufacture of spurious liquor in hilly hamlets in the district, the department has decided to prepare a list of those suspected and closely monitor their activities. Surprise raids may be held. The decision to set up the special squads was taken in view of the possibility of large-scale illicit liquor smuggling from the neighbouring States through various channels in the coming days, a senior official said. Those who provide information about storage of liquor will be offered compensation and their identity kept a secret, the official said. To contact the department, call 04994 257060. The Kasaragod Excise Circle Office can be contacted on 04994255332, the Excise Control Room, Hosdurg, on 04672204125, and the Kasaragod Excise Range Office on 04994 257541.
