Life of Jesus on stamps

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: The story of the birth, life and death of Jesus Christ has been told through stories, songs, books and films. But a high school student has managed to show scenes of the life of Jesus through stamps of numerous countries, including Sri Lanka.

Displaying his exhibition here during an exhibit organised by the Dakshina Kannada Philately and Numismatic Association on Sunday, Joash Prabhu said that 90 stamps had been included in his exhibit.

Stamps from Grenada showed angels telling Mother Mary she would bear a child. A sheetlet – a sheet containing four or six stamps – issued by Samoa I Sisifo in 1976 shows Joseph and Mary together, the couple holding baby Jesus, the three shepherds and the three kings who brought gifts to the new born child in sequence.

Stamps dated 1991 from the Solomon Islands showed Christmas Day celebrations in the country of thousand islands. One showed the preparation of Christmas food, the next shows the church service, followed by the feast and lastly a cricket match, complete with clearly visible wickets.

The other collection on display was put together by Joshua Prabhu, a pre-university student. It displayed antique and vintage cars, with information about certain cars. For instance, a sheet containing British stamps of a model named “Morris Minor” was accompanied with a remark that it was an expensive car imported in the 1940s from Britain. In contrast, stamps showing Russian cars carried a remark that these could weather tough climatic conditions.

Argentine stamps had profiles of sporting personalities and sports cars in a panel inset with stamps. In 1998, Afghanistan issued stamps depicting the La Mancelle, a model manufactured in the 1878.
