For this five-year-old, election numbers are child's play

Karthik Madhavan

U. Avyut

COIMBATORE: Election, for many, is a numbers game. A big game at that. For U. Avyut too it is a game. But of a different kind. Without batting an eyelid, the chubby five-year-old boy can tell you the number of electors in each of the five states going to the polls in April. He starts with Assam's statistics and even before you begin to drop your jaws in surprise, is finished with West Bengal's numbers.

Son of K. Umesh Babu, a film distributor, and Anuradha, a home maker, Avyut is also equally at ease with the number of Rajya Sabha and Lok Shaba seats that each Indian state has.

After narrating details of the number of seats to the Lower and Upper Houses, comes the absolute stunner: he also reels out the number of nominated seats in the two.

A student of Stanes Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in the city, Avyut can also name the dates of all the Lok Sabha sessions, right from the first in 1950 to the latest. Mr. Babu says he did not have to put in much effort to help Avyut remember the data because it was taught to him in a play-way method. “I used to feed him with the information whenever we were playing, were on our way to his school, or while he was given a bath.”

Avyut's favourite subject is maths and he loves watching Tom and Jerry on Cartoon Network.
