TANGEDCO officials stage protest

R. Srikanth

CHENNAI: Over 150 officials of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) assembled at the Superintending Engineer's Office of Central Zone at Valluvarkottam on Monday to protest the filing of police complaints by the Chennai Corporation officials against road cuts while attending to underground cable faults on holidays.

This is the second such case where a police complaint has been filed against the TANGEDCO for work carried out on a Sunday.

V. Ashok Kumar, secretary, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Engineers Sangam, said the officials had assembled to highlight their problem to the Superintending Engineer.

He said that at the meeting it was decided that repair work would be taken only in those cases in which permission for road cuts was given.

Confirming that a police complaint was filed at the Saidapet station, an official of the civic body of Saidapet Zone said that the TANGEDCO workers were attending to a cable fault in the recently laid CIT Nagar 1st Main Road in T. Nagar without seeking the civic body's approval for a road cut on Sunday. A complaint was filed for damaging public property, he added.

TANGEDCO Chairman C.P. Singh said that he had written to the Commissioner of Chennai Corporation to put in place a mechanism for executing repair works on holidays, as police complaints where filed on Sundays, by which the TANGEDCO officials would be able to attend faults by getting road cut permission.
