Erode
ERODE: Over 500 accidents were reported in Erode town limits during the last 14 months. A total of 115 people lost their lives and more than 1000 sustained serious injuries in the accidents. Traffic violations, rise in two-wheeler population and congested roads were said to be the major reasons for increase in road accidents in the town limits. “In the last two months, over 75 accidents have been reported and 25 people have lost their lives. Most of these accidents have occurred due to violation of traffic rules,” a senior police official said. More than 100 violations are being reported everyday in Erode town and its suburbs. Even as the traffic police claim to have stepped up enforcement, motorists continue to break rules at alarming rates. “Disregard for traffic rules results in major fatalities on the town roads,” police officials said. Signal jumping, speeding, overloading and drunken driving are the most common violations reported in the town limits. But a majority of these violations go unrecorded.
