A great moment

I was a great admirer of President John F. Kennedy. When he was shot dead, I sent a condolence message in an aerogramme to Jacqueline Kennedy from Manapad, my native village. After a few months, I received a reply from her in a specially made cover with black borders and her full name in the place of postage stamps, thanking me for the condolence message. She had also enclosed a few photos of President Kennedy and a memorial service card. The U.S. postal department had permitted free postage for her to acknowledge the millions of condolence messages she received.

On learning that I had received a letter from Jacqueline Kennedy, our postman took the letter to almost all the houses in our village and made me a hero before delivering it to my father, who promptly redirected the letter to St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai, where I was a first-year undergraduate student.

Tharcius S. Fernando,

Chennai
