Staff Correspondent

LARGE GATHERING:The annual ‘Sidi' ritual is performed by the devotees of Kanaka Durgamma in Bellary.

BELLARY: A large number of people witnessed ‘Sidi', an annual ritual performed by devotees of Kanaka Durgamma, the principal deity of Bellary.

The ‘Sidi', a pole used for extracting oil in the traditional ‘gana', is tied to a couple of bullocks and taken round the temple twice.

According to some elderly people, a person used to be hanged from the sidi in ancient times. Now, only a doll is hanged.

Vehicular traffic on Sangankal Road and the underpass in Parvati Nagar was diverted on Tuesday.

Cultural programmes organised for the occasion went on throughout the night.
