Staff Correspondent

Nine teams playing in the matches being held since Monday

UNSTOPPABLE:The hockey match between Mangalore Sports Club and St. Aloysius College in progress in Mangalore on Tuesday.

MANGALORE: Defender Somanna of Mangalore Hockey Club was saying aloud to his teammate to induce a foul on St. Aloysius A team's centre-half Karan Kushalappa than give the later a goal scoring opportunity. Their coach A.C. Deenamani was seen giving directions to the team members, which is a combination of newcomers and old players.

This was the passion seen at the third match of the Dakshina Kannada Hockey Association league between the Mangalore Hockey Club and St. Aloysius A team on Tuesday.

The St. Aloysius A team defeated the Mangalore Hockey Club by a margin of 5-0. The winner of the league will be given the Benjamin D'Souza Memorial Rolling Trophy.

The association is organising a league after a gap of two decades. “Absence of a league has made district team ineligible for participating in the State-level league matches,” said Ms. Deenamani, who is the District Hockey Coach of the Sports Authority of Karnataka.

In the absence of designated Hockey ground, the matches have to be held on the grounds where football and other games are played, said Gerald D'Souza, the Honorary Secretary of the Hockey Association. The league matches are being played at the St. Aloysius College's Centenary Grounds. “This is a multipurpose ground. We had to prepare it for holding matches,” Mr. D'Souza said.

New team

As many as nine teams are participating in the league matches that started from Monday. Among those who are participating in the matches include players such as Karan Kushalappa and J.P. Devaiah, who represent the Mangalore University hockey team.

The new Mangalore Hockey Club team has senior players such as Somanna and Nizel Montero and young players such as 15-year-old Bheemappa and 17-year-old Arjun. While Somanna studies in Pompei High School, Arjun is from the Sri Gokarnanatheshwara College. The association has taken services of the Kasturba Medical College's medical team to attend the injuries for players.

It has brought some hockey sticks and new balls. The final league match will be held on March 24.
