VIJAYAWADA: A raid on Vijayawada Cultural and Social Club, popularly known as Madapati Club, located opposite the west entrance of the railway station at Tarapet, on Tuesday evening by a large contingent of policemen led to seizure of a huge amount of cash, which was expected to be in the range of Rs.50 lakh to Rs. 1 crore. In an operation that was meticulously planned by the Commissioner's Task Force at the initiative of Commissioner of Police Amit Garg, 50-70 policemen of different police stations under the west zone raided the club around 7 p.m. and continued the search and seizure operations till last reports came in. The police detained all the persons who were playing cards at 28 tables in three halls, and their number was said to be about 150. The police said that the raid was conducted after they came to know that the club management was encouraging gambling by non-members too, using the pretext of possessing permission given by the High Court.
