Syndicate member says Prabhu Dev insulted him

K.V. Acharya walks out of meeting and stages a dharna

Acharya says he was not given the meeting notice and agenda

Varisty adopts GO with regard to revision of AICTE payscales

BANGALORE: High drama prevailed on the Central College campus of Bangalore University on Wednesday when a member of the Syndicate walked out of the meeting in protest against the “autocratic” behaviour of Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev and staged a dharna.

Syndicate member K.V. Acharya, who has locked horns with the Vice-Chancellor, told reporters after storming out of the meeting that Dr. Prabhu Dev had “insulted” him in front of other members.

Though a few members came out and persuaded Dr. Acharya to return to the meeting, the Syndicate member stormed out of the meeting again a few minutes later, shouting slogans against the Vice-Chancellor.

“I was not given the meeting notice and agenda. When I asked for the same, he asked me to apologise for my behaviour in the previous meeting. I was slighted and snubbed,” he said.

Dr. Acharya recalled that during the previous Syndicate meeting, Dr. Prabhu Dev refused to entertain his request for providing details of financial expenditure of the university.

“I want the details of the Rs. 1.4 crore, which the university wants to spend on smart cards for university employees”, he said.

Dr. Acharya claimed that other Syndicate members, who were recently nominated by the Government, including Jagadish Prasad, Srinivasaiah and D N Krishna, walked out of the meeting in protest against the Vice-Chancellor's behaviour.

Meanwhile, Bangalore University, in a statement, said the Vice-Chancellor allowed Dr. Acharya into the meeting in deference to a letter from Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya though the former had not apologised for his behaviour in the previous meeting.

“This initiative by the Vice-Chancellor was with an intention to create harmony and smooth working atmosphere. But, Dr. Acharya complained that he was not given meeting notice in time, and hence wanted the meeting to be postponed”. Because of the urgency of approval of the budget estimates of the university, which is to be placed before the academic council and make provisions for expenditure for the next financial year, including salaries, the meeting continued and Dr. Acharya walked out of the meeting, the University statement said.

“The Vice-Chancellor requested a few Syndicate members to bring back Dr. K.V Acharya for the meeting. Dr. Acharya came back to meeting and stormed out of the meeting again as his views were not recorded”.

Meanwhile, the Syndicate resolved to adopt the Government orders with regard to revision of AICTE payscales and enhancement of age for AICTE teachers from 60 years to 62 years, for implementation in Bangalore University for teachers in the UVCE.
