‘State ready to offer health assistance to Japan'

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Expressing solidarity with the people of tsunami-hit Japan, the Karnataka Government has offered to extend health assistance to that country.

Medical Education Minister S.A. Ramdas told The Hindu on Wednesday that two teams of medical personnel would go to Japan with supplies of medicines, food, water and clothing.

“We have discussed the issue with the Chief Minister, who has requested the Foreign Affairs Minister to coordinate. We are also working out the modalities with the Japanese Embassy. The teams will be ready to leave within 48 hours after we get approval from the embassy,” he said.

The first team, comprising 25 doctors drawn from the 10 government medical colleges, 50 nurses and 30 paramedical volunteers along with three scientists, is ready.

The Minister said he had also written to authorities in the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre seeking the services of six scientists to accompany the teams.

Mr. Ramdas said that Japanese companies in Bangalore had also been contacted for coordination.
