Security tightened on Mysore varsity campus

Staff Correspondent

Police personnel at scholar's residence as well

Over 100 police personnel deployed

Associate professor had been threatened

MYSORE: Security in Mysore university's Manasagangotri campus has been strengthened following Wednesday's incident in which an associate professor in Zoology was threatened by a group of research scholars.

The group, led by one Raghu, created a ruckus in professor M. Bhagya's chamber and threatened her for agreeing to guide the research scholar who was allegedly sexually harassed by her former research guide, Shivabasavaiah.

Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal told The Hindu here on Thursday that police protection had been given to the new guide and over 100 police personnel deployed on campus.

“Security has also been given to the research scholar at her residence. There is no need for them to fear anybody,” Mr. Agarwal said, and urged the students to allow the law to take its course.

The Police Commissioner also visited the campus on Thursday to speak to Prof. Bhagya.

Promising to act against trouble-makers, he said, “The students' act is nothing but goondaism and the police will not tolerate such acts.”

Scholar to resume work

Meanwhile, the research scholar who reported to work under the new guide a few days ago is expected to continue work from next week.

According to sources in the university, an uneasy calm has prevailed on campus following the incident on Wednesday.
