CHENNAI: The arterial roads in Ambattur Industrial Estate, which are witnessing an increase in the volume of traffic over the past few years, will soon be widened. This and many other projects aimed at comprehensive development of the estate have been identified by the Chennai Auto Ancillary Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Company (CAAIIUC), a special purpose vehicle.

The company will widen the South Avenue Road, First and Second Main Roads in the Estate from their present width of 15 metre to 30 metre in three months. The work will be taken up at a cost of Rs.2.5 crore. A total of 28 cross roads will also be widened by five metre. The CAAIIUC plans to seek police support to install traffic signals, particularly on the South Avenue Road.

On Wednesday, a high-mast lamp installed on South Avenue Road, where accidents frequently occur, was inaugurated at a function organised by CAAIIUC. The facilities, including a median on the road, have been established with the help of sponsors. M. John Chelliah, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ambattur district, and R. Samuthirapandi, Superintendent of Police, Tamil Nadu Special Police, XV Battalion, appreciated the efforts of the special purpose vehicle in improving illumination facilities.

CAAIIUC's Chairman Dilip Kumbhat said 70 per cent of the works taken up at a total cost of Rs.61 crore had been completed. These include construction of concrete stormwater drains covering a distance of 88 km. “We have developed Second Main Road as a model road, with nearly 4 metre wide footpath, adequate illumination, pedestrian crossing and pay and use toilet at a cost of Rs.2.5 crore. The Pattaravakkam Station Road will also be developed on the same lines,” he said.

A police booth had also been set up on the road, as many chain snatching incidents have been reported in the area. A jet rodding machine costing Rs.55 lakh would also be procured in a month to clean the sewer network. In addition to the three public conveniences, three more would be provided, he added.

R. Selvaraj, president of Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association, said the estate, spread over 1,430 acres, houses about 1,800 units. There are plans to develop a green belt in the estate by planting about 10,000 saplings. Treated water from the two sewage treatment plants with a total capacity of five million litres a day would be used for maintaining greenery.

An effluent treatment plant worth Rs.6 crore, would be set up in north phase in six months with the support of 80 unit holders, he said.

In a bid to improve transport connectivity between south and north phases of the estate, CAAIIUC would soon introduce four mini-buses. The maintenance of the estate would be handed over to SIDCO after six years, he added.
